  2. for parliamentary reform in Ireland. It later
  3. became a secret revolutionary group. Inspired
  4. by the republican ideals of the French
  5. Revolution, the United Irishmen was initially
  6. a debating society, calling for reforms such
  7. as the right of Catholics to vote in Irish
  8. elections, but after an attempt to suppress
  9. it in 1793, the organization became secret,
  10. looking to France for military aid. An
  11. attempted insurrection in 1798 was quickly
  12. defeated and the leaders captured.
